MS Office Free

Taking the plunge.  I’m uninstalling MS Office from my work machine.

I’ve been running Open Office on my home machine for over a year and, while there was a very minor initial learning curve, we’ve really had no problems.

My wife’s initial reaction was: “Where’s Excel?  What the hell did you do to the home computer?”   But after about 2 weeks, the dust settled and now I only get the occasional “how do I” question.

So…here is it goes.  So long MS Office!

An additional upside:  More room on my harddrive for music!

  1. When my 10 year old could not find her way around MS Office 2007, it was time to show her OpenOffice. Her comment “this is so much easier”. If the future is in our kids hand, MS Office will need to make things easier for our kids to engage.

  2. I haven’t had a computer with Microsoft Office on it for years and years. I don’t miss it. I don’t think my children have ever used Microsoft Office (not that they use OpenOffice.org that much – they prefer GCompris and Tuxpaint at the moment). Microsoft are just so last century.

  3. Good for you Dave!!! OpenOffice rocks! MS Office is a hog!

  4. Good choice. Good choice.

When I bought a new PC for my wife (an Acer) it came with 60 and 90 day trial versions of Norton Internet Security and Office 2007. After taking a brief look at Office 2007 (being used to Office 2003) and then a brief look at OpenOffice, my wife gave the verdict… Microsoft goes, OpenOffice stays. By the way, Norton Internet Security quickly followed…

  5. Thanks all, for the encouragement. I’m pretty confident this is going to work out.

THE greatest challenge is that it is my WORK machine that I have removed MS office from. I receive TONS of complex Excel documents every day that are laden with macros. THIS was the only reason that I hesitated moving over my work machine to something else.

But now I’m running Symphony on my TP. So far, even those crazy spreadsheets seem to be working just fine.

I wonder how many others are out there thinking “oh..I can’t move to something else because my MACROS won’t work???”

    Pbblltt!
